ABPR had a bunch of these on this date. This Southern Ry. one was from 1936. Hard to imagine, at this late date, that the rail industry actually once cared about its image with the public.

Look familiar, Bob?

That image showed up in a couple of different forms. It was taken by the company photographer at Waterloo, and was NOT set up. Southern or BR eventually tracked down the boy in the photo - he had emigrated to Canada, as I recall.

I'll see if I can find more details.

This one was done by Russian artist and filmmaker Alexandre Alexeieff for LNER. Only two copies are known to survive, and one fetched GBP 11,000 at auction in 1996.

There is at least one copy existing of this poster, advertising the complementary service from Waverly to King's Cross, as well.

This is my personal favourite. What a great way to link the fascination of a young boy with locomotives and being an engine driver. Well done Southern!

"The Flying Scotsman" was the daily early-morning departure from Edinburgh Waverly to London King's Cross (arriving mid-morning), and the 10am departure from London to Edinburgh. It was a "Pullman," which did NOT mean it carried beds - that was a "sleeper." Pullman trains were first class and club cars.

This train was still on the British Rail timetable in the mid-90s, using standard HST cars. It probably still is.

The Night Scotsman" was a sleeper train in both directions.

Then again, there was the locomotive of the same name.

I was merely attempting a pun on the name of the locomotive and related train, given that the (A3?) in the photo appears to be mid-air. (Great poster, just sort of amusing to see a locomotive and train depicted without rails or ground.)
