Post subject: Hitler's Diaries... Hitler's Invasion Plans... Hitler's Rail

This came across the newswire from the Association of Railway Museums, and I thought some of you might be worthy of the question:

Rod Fishburn wrote:
>
> We just received an inquiry from the congressional Research Service from
> the Library of Congress asking if ARM knew what became of Hitler's
> private railcar. They believe it was brought to the United States after
> WW2 by the US Army but from then on they have no record. Do any of you
> have any information on such a car? If you do, would you please call
> Barbara Salazar at (202)707-8996 with the information and send an email
> to your PartsLetter editor for his information.
>
> Thanks,
>
> Rod
Several Grosser Mercedes Benz 770 K's open touring cars reportedly to
have been used by A. Hitler were brought to the US after WW II and were
shown across the country. This from my personal recollections circa
1946 or 1947.
However, I doubt very much that anything like a private railroad car was
ever brought to the US. While there is much motion picture footage
showing Hitler traveling by train dating from the 30s and early 40s, all
showed him on board what appeared to have been standard Wagon-Lits
equipment.
For what it's worth, hope this helps.
Rick Borgwardt

Rick;
Some German railway equipment did make its way to the states after the war. They included a 'Kriegslok' (BR50) with a condensing tender, a diesel trainset similiar to the "Flying Hamburger", and the one-off "V-8" steam locomotive 19.001 (see link below). All went to Fort Eustis, VA, where they were examined then scrapped in 1952. Don Ross saw them there just prior to scrapping, and descibes them at http://donross.ralspot.com/dr109.htm.
