| Post subject: | How Many New Turntables? |
The Steam Railroading Institute is installing a 100-foot turntable at its site on the T&SB Rwy. at Owosso, Michigan. This project was engineered by an SRI volunteer civil engineer. We learned quite a bit about turntable engineering in the process, and I am writing this material up for the organization's publication. As a footnote to this article, I would like to mention how many turntables have been installed recently. I suspect the total is larger than many would expect. I know of a couple by carriers and commuter agencies, but don't recall the locations. Most recent new installations have been by museums or tourist lines. I know about the ones at Strasburg, Sacramento, Chattanooga (2), Dearborn and Frostburg. Can readers of this board tell me which other ones don't I know about? Thanks, Aarne H. The CPR/D&H installed a brand new one in the former DL&W Yard in Conklin (East Binghamton, NY) about a decade ago (new bridge, new pit). It sits a few hundred yards from the original DL&W pit and across town from the D&H's tt site. From what I understand, the CPR has put in several over the last decade as they seem to be very strict about running power short-hood forward. IS that a correct impression, Bob? Steamtown's went in around 1990,right? I believe that is a new bridge in an old pit. Wasn't there one just rebuilt in Georgia? Rob |

Amtrak installed a turntable at the Lorton, VA Auto Train facility about 5 or 6 years ago to replace a wye that was being removed to accomodate new ramps on I-95. pww57@hotmail.com |

Arrne, It’s not “in” the ground yet, but The Railroad Museum of Long Island is in the works of installing an eighty-six foot Grand Trunk Railways turntable at our Riverhead NY Museum. Moved from the Arcade and Attic Railroad at Arcade, NY in April 2002, scraping, cleaning, priming and painting of the bridge is ongoing as it rests on blocks in our “back yard” area. Certified soil bearing tests have recently been completed and the pit wall, bearing foundation and ring rail base is in the design phase right now. This is a work in progress and is considered Phase I of our Riverhead Development Plan. The City of Summerville, Georgia has completed installation of an ex-L&N turntable. It has been used twice by TVRM: May 31 dedication ceremony and June 14 "Steam All The Way" excursion. Next use: October 4. Excursion tickets available. Steam Central Summerville Report sfreer@tvrail.com |

Here's a couple more - the Belfast & Moosehead Lake at Unity, ME was installed after the swedish steam locomotive was acquired. Used table in a new concrete pit. Built in the early 90's I think. Knox & Kane in Marienville, PA has a semi-pit installation to turn the Chinese steam locomotive. Same thing - used turntable in a tie-crib pit. '80's sometime. Definite low-budget but it works. While we are on the topic, who has any turntables in storage for sale or know of any for sale? The City of Folsom also has a new turntable near where the first railroad shops in California were located. This is a wooden one build using the same casting paterns that were used for the NSRM and OERM ones. However, the Folsom turntable is a stand alone without any connecting track. Most new turntable installations have seen an existing turntable bridge installed in a new or enlarged pit. What are the logistics of installing an existing bridge in an existing pit, especially not the original from the same pit? As turntable clearances are very close, how does one get everything exactly centered? ryarger@rypn.org |
