M&H 91 Update

Wednesday July 16, 2003 was a very good night for the cause of operating steam in Middletown, Pa. The dedicated Middletown and Hummelstown steam crew worked for several hours in the Middletown and Hummelstown Engine House (a.k.a. the “Bachman Locomotive Works” and completed significant milestones in the restoration of former Canadian National 2-6-0 #91 with the installation of the main rods/new brass and tender coal bunker floor.

The rod installation received a small test when the locomotive was pulled out of the M&H engine house by Alco S-6 #151 in order to allow the installion of the coal bunker floor with a forklift. The engine moved smoothly, providing all appearances of a “perfect fit”.

Crews will be working over the next two weeks to finish the installation of valve gear and brake components, herald and number painting as well as final hydrostatic testing to allow a planned August 2, 2003 debut for the engine after an absence of nearly a decade.
