There was a recent discussion below about preserving MOW equipment. Within a day or so the following image was available on eBay--brought a smile wondering about the issues of maintaining the maintanence equipment.

Strangly, this is a commonly used technique on the SPCRR's Ardenwood railroad. We have horses, and use them to maintain the railroad, as well as using them to pull trains.

Horses (as motive power) are a bit unique in that they are not tied to the tracks. They are great at pulling ties out, just pull the spikes, chain them to a set of tie tongs, and out the ties come.

Maintaining them is easy, just hay, water, and the occasional carrot
