Extra 2200 South magazine did a study on GE's 44 ton switcher in Issues 51 & 52(Mar-Apr/May-Jun 1975). Back issues are available from Railfax. Check their website for more details.

What do you want to know about them? We've got a GE 44 tonner and a 45 tonner at SCRM, although neither have been in service for several years now due to the FRA brake regs.

Now that the equipment trade between the Portola Railroad Museum and the Western Railway Museum has been made public, I can say more about the Diesel I am trying to research.

It is Salt Lake, Garfiled & Western 44 ton DS-2. Built by GE (?) about 1946. I would like to know when and its C/N.

The 44 ton switchers took over from many Interurbans when the wire came down after World War II. We will soon have 3 of them, each from a different line, at Rio Vista and they are not going to tear up our light weight Interurban 60 pound rails the way some larger Diesels will.
