I'm curious as to how many movies made in the last 10 years have steam engines in the movie, and the extent of their roles.

The Frisco 1522 was in the HBO movie "Truman." The shooting occurred at Weston Missouri, north of Kansas City. The 1522 was used for Harry Truman on his whistle stop campaign tour of 1948 train.

William Mason was in Wild, Wild West
4449 was used as the Gold Coast Flyer in Tough Guys
475 was in Thomas and the Magig Railroad
1223 was in Hello Dolly
261 and 2317 were in Steam and Steel

one of the Cumbres and Toltec engines was in Indiana Jones and the last crusade

The Reno and the J W Boker were used to simulate the Golden Spike scene in The Wild, Wild West
A canadien 2-6-2 was in Shanghi Noon

The Reno was also in Tombstone the last real western and many other movies. She was one of the top movie engines until the mid 90's, because of a fire.

Also in Pearl Harbor, and SP engine played a Long Island Railroad engine, wow they went all out to make that movie oh boy a LIRR engine with a vanderbuilt tender

There a lot in the last 10 years, but most are not very authentically portrayed as is normal for Hollywood with anything historical it seems.
4501 was in a movie about a kid who got into rocketry(O Winston Link was the engineer in it). Can't recall the name(about 10 years ago).
My favorite all-time(not in last 10-years)is "The Trains" with real French engines, and "Von Ryans Express" although I understand it was shot in Spain. Engines were definately Italian though, and I liked the plot!

Gee Greg, we filmed October Sky with the 4501 in April of 1998! Theatrical release was, I think, April of 1999, not quite 10 years ago. Having O. Winston Link on site for his cameo appearance was a real treat.

4501 was has also appeared in several other films (The Color Purple, Eleanor and Franklin, Fools Parade are some that come to mind) not to mention Mr. Cash's "Riding the Rails". Our 610 recently was used in the made for TV film "Momma Flora's Family". "Fled" and "Ty Cobb" also had some scenes filmed at TVRM but I think those scenes had dismals in them.

Don't forget the B&O Museum Mason #25's appearances in "Tuck Everlasting" and "Gods and Generals", cameos that they were. What with the V&T"s "Inyo" and "Dayton" in museum retirement (both owned by Paramount for film production) and the unfortunate fire damage to the "Reno", the only pre 1880-era loco left availible for filming seems to be the "Mason". And I wonder how much the B&O wants to put it out in harms way nowdays...

I don't know about "harms way" since filming with the No 25 is carefully supervised by Museum personnel, but my guess is they would jump at the chance to raise much-need cash...

AT&SF 3751 had a cameo as a "New York Railway" engine in the pseudo-history film "Pearl Harbor."

You know also I like the fact that the Queen Mary was in Peace time colors in that movie, and I am suprised that they did not go up to Railtown for a sort of Long Island Railroad looking engine. But what I also thought was funny was that I did not know we had mountains on Long Island?

On one "Indiana Jones" TV show only a close up of the running gear in motion of a dead locomotive was shown to represent a train trip. That one was shot at the Western Railway Museum.

Since Orange Empire Railway Museum is not too far from Hollywood, it is used for a number of location shots. In one movie passengers are getting off a Union Pacific car allegedly in Reno, Nevada, with trolley wire overhead.

There is a movie out now with Tom Sellick call "Monte Walsh" (I believe) where in one scene, a bunch of cowboys attack a steam engine after the crew blew the whistle to spook a herd of horses. In this scene, they lasso the engine stack and pull it off. Don't know what engine was used in filming but it looked good!
