Last month there was a discussion on Trainorders.com asking why McKinney Ave. Transit didn't have any of the Dallas PCC cars that were sold to Boston in the 1950's. There was a report that MBTA 3329 had gone to Age of Steam Museum in Dallas in 1980, but it doesn't show up on the Preserved Electric Railway Cars list. I'm wondering what happened to it.
Thirteen "Texas Rangers" are listed, one is in service as a line car in Boston, the others are "stored inoperable" in various locations, with most at Seashore Trolley Museum. I asked a knowledgeable person in SF Muni-land about Dallas PCC's and he said that the eastern road salt had ruined them.

And it sure does ...Cleveland cars (pre PCC) were notorious for falling apart from the bottom up. For a look at how you solve this problem and IMHO a fantastic project take a look at the link below.

Hi I know a lot of old car fans ie fords etc.. Most of them use por 15 to stop rust. Its not cheap but cost less than repairing rust out. You can find it for sale at old cars shows or by mail order. See ads in Hemmins auto news. regards bb

I don't know a thing about this subject, but I wonder if road salt was much of a problem for MBTA's Dallas PCCs. In my recollection, they were mostly used on Huntington Ave. subway short turns, switching back just west of the subway portal, and on the Mattapan line that was entirely on private right of way. I'm not sure they got on the streets at all, or if they did it was not for long.

The salt came in on snow clinging to people's shoes, melted on the floor, and then ran over to the walls where it did its corrosion thing (calcium cabonate, I believe). With cars which also ran in the street, wheel wash also coated everything under the car with the same corrosive solution.
