I'm going to be in Las Vegas in the middle of next month. I will have a little free time. Is there anything of rail interest nearby?

Las Vegas, NV right? Not NM?
In Las Vegas, NV there is a casino/lounge/restaurant with at least two old private cars incorporated into it. The place is like a museum because it also has artwork and stained glass from various old buildings, mansions, etc.
I'll see if I can come up with the casino's name.

Used to be The Station Casino.

One of two business cars parked outside is Colorado Midland "Cascade". Believe the other was ex Burlington Route "The Aleutian". This same place used to have an ex UP dome lounge also.

Is downtown just to the north of the Union Plaza Hotel and Casino.

You might want to check the Web site for the Southern Nevada Chapter - National Railway Historical Society at the link below. They have a page on the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City, Nevada.

If you have an extra day, visit the Nevada Northern Railway Museum in Ely, Nevada (http://nevadanorthernrailway.net). It's about 240 miles north of Las Vegas. You can see the UP Mission Revival depot in Caliente on the way, as well as ex-CNW steam locomitive No. 279 in the park at the intersection of Main St. and Pioche St. in Pioche, Nevada.

At Henderson, on the old Boulder Highway, near where the freeway comes into the highway, is the southern Nevada (Clark County) Museum. It has the relocated Boulder City depot, a 0-6-0 that was once on display in Las Vegas, a caboose and a box car, and an early Harriman steel coach.

Also a number of houses and other buildings relocated from Las Vegas and ohter places in southern Nevada. These houses are furnished to represent different eras that match their constructiona and use.

The railroad cars and station casino are in the rougher end of town. Just be aware of that. In the MGM Casino, on the playground level, I believe there is and LS&I steam locomotive built into the build. You have to pay to get into the playground and it isn't cheap! Rent a car and drive thirty miles down to Boulder City. The Nevada State Rwy Museum shops are there and you can probably get one of the men to take you on a guided tour of the yard. There is a plethora of old steam locomotives and rolling stock in there. They also have an active FM H1244 switcher in service. At Henderson, Nevada, which is on the route, there is a casino with a mining lokey outside and a Shay across the street on a hilltop. All is worth seeing, and it isn't far out of town. BRING WATER TO DRINK! I was there last month. Also, check the U.P. and BNSF facilities. Two trips ago, I caught the U.P.'s Challenger in there. I also believe there is a displayed, but ravaged Santa Fe 2-6-2 in town.

Union Pacific moved out of the downtown land on which the yard and engine facility was located. The land is being/has been redeveloped. The Union Plaza Hotel at the railroad end of Fremont Street (on which the downtown casinos are located) was built on the former site of the UP station. When it was built they included a passenger facility off to one side which Amtrak used for a while.

The State RR museum at Boulder city has a nice shop building and a simple, but nice, loading platform. The old Boulder station building is at the museum in Henderson as noted above.
