Red Arrow 07 is still around - in 1997 the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum acquired it from SEPTA.

07 was not a refrigerated milk car, although it is likely that it carried milk during part of its life as a freight car. Similar car 06 was a milk car. according to Ron De Graw's book.

We also own PTC T16, a trash car from the Market-Frankford rapid transit line, which started out as PRT milk car F22.

Both cars are stored outdoors under tarps, and are scheduled to be moved into our new carbarn early next year.

Hi Art,

I assume the 06 and F22 were uninsulated and used for milk can service.

Were they both powered during their milk service, or were they trailers?

As Phil said, both were powered cars. 06 is undoubtedly long gone, as Ron DeGraw lists it as being sold by P&WC in 1925. I looked at a builders photo of the interior of F22 and it did have shelves for milk cans and wood inner sheathing. Probably, 06 was similar. I suspect that the heavy double sheathed wood carbody served as insulation for both of these cars, which were reported to have primitive refrigeration equipment.

Since F22 was out of milk service in 1922, and was heavily rebuilt in 1950 when it was assigned to the Market-Frankford line, it is unlikely that we will ever know for sure if there was additional insulating material in the roof or sidewalls.

Incidentally, neither 07 or T16 are currently operable. 07 is more complete mechanically, but needs major body work. T16 has a better body, although sheathed in plywood by SEPTA, but needs the trucks changed and I believe is missing a compressor.
