A sprinkler system (around $2 per square foot) would probably have prevented this. What is that compared to the cost of reconstruction?

Smoke detectors are only useful in the evacuation of building occupants, and do little to protect your structure. Consider the real cost of replacing a historic building in the event of an unthinkable disaster. The same applies to a pole barn filled with one-of-a-kind wooden cars. If there is any way to install a sprinkler system, make it a priority!
