Today's steam star stored at Shoreham roundhouse, Minneapolis, 7/21/57. It would make a few more excursions, then be sent to Eau Claire for display.

I have a DVD, I think it is eithr Steam in the 50's & 60's or Twilight of Steam that shows this engine under steam moving the Pershing 2-8-0 around the museum grounds. I wonder how many times she ran at the museum before being retired.

Tom,
Ed Selinsky, who helped restore and now fires Milwaukee Road #261, has told me that he rode the cab of 2718 at the museum at Green Bay a time or two when he was a kid. I think he frequents this board. Ed, any comments? See you this weekend in Minneapolis for the work weekend.....

In the book Twilight of the Steam Locomotive there is a picture of the 24 under steam at the museum. The caption said something about the engine being at rest between switching duties at the museum.

I would like to know more about operations there.
How often did they fire things up, etc...?

The Soo Line 2718 only ran a couple of times after she was put in the museum. When a major exhibit was brought in there was usually a steam up and an acceptance ceremony. I'm working only on memory here but I believe it was May 6, 1962 when the 2718 was fired up to pull in the DM&IR #506. She may have been fired up on other similar occasions, but was never run regularly, Once the LS&I #24 was donated, she took over that role and I don't believe the 2718 was ever fired up again.I do recall that the steam dome cover was removed and interior inspection of the throttle valve took place some time later, but it was never run after that. #24 was fired up occasionally for switching moves and pulling in donated equipment for a couple years. She also was the regular power on the daily passenger trips on the circle mile of track one summer, I don't remember which one. During the seasons of '65-'66-'67, an 0-4-0 #29 was the regular power on the passenger trains and did all the switching duties that it could handle. When heavier power was needed, the C&NW diesels were brought in to do the job.Live steam faded out not long after that. (Ironically, it will be coming back occasionally starting this weekend, August 16-17, Sept. 26-27, and Oct. 25-26 with weekend operation of the Heisler locomotive from the Kettle Moraine Railway. see the museum link below.)
