Some years ago, I'm told, the folks preserving the depot in Huntsville, Alabama rebuilt a roundhouse on a nearby foundation. Does anyone have photos and details of this? The foreign link below shows a narrow gauge Crown 4-4-0 displayed on the turntable, plus a standard gauge 0-4-0 they have there, but no shots of the roundhouse itself.

I go by the place often and I took some pictures a few years ago, which I don't have available at the moment. I believe the roundhouse has three stalls. There is no track in the building now, although there was one or more tracks put in when the roundhouse was constructed. The doors facing the turntable are mostly glass and the building is primarily used for meetings and banquets. It is located on the south side of the depot museum property and the whole facility is owned by the City of Huntsville. The 1860 depot is a pretty interesting place but is temporarily closed for renovations.

The original Memphis & Charleston roundhouse was located on the north side of the main line. I believe some recent excavation in the area uncovered the M&C turntable pivot.

The 1856 M&C freight depot is located across the track from the Depot Museum. Local preservationists blocked NS from tearing the building down a couple of years ago, but it is somewhat in limbo at the moment. The city would like to include it as part of the Depot Museum, but it is poor condition and surrounded by active tracks.

The page is in Japanese. I spent two years over there with the Navy, and was very surprised at how many fans of American railroads there are over there. I stumble across Japanese web pages featuring American railroad equipment all the time while searching for info on the web. They usually come up when doing Google searches.
It would be interesting to see just how many Japanese tourists visit our railroad museums each year, as I know that the U.S. is one of the top Japanese tourist destinations. How much of their yen are we getting to support our museums?

I should rephrase a couple of my comments. I said American and U.S., and should have said North America, as there is as much Japanese interest in Mexican and Canadian railroads as U.S. railroads.
