PRR 0-6-0 643 website

Just came across this website (see below link) concerning the overhaul of ex-Pennsylvania RR class B4a 0-6-0 643.

For nearly four decades this 1901 Juniata Shops product has operated on a mile or so of track at Williams Grove, Pa (near Harrisburg). In recent years, 643 became the last operable steam locomotive from the Pennsy. Her owner, the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association (WGHSEA) last operated her in September 2001. A major rebuilding effort is being set forth and the WGHSEA is seeking both volunteer help and funds.

Hopefully 643 will return to steam in the not too distant future. It's a neat little operation with a truly classic locomotive. Also home to fun $5 cabrides and the occasional chance to sign up as "guest engineer" (had the pleasure a couple times).

Hello

I happened to be in the area 2 weeks ago and took a few shots of the engine, which is in an open-ended shed. The boiler/firebox is still on the frame/wheels. The tender is disconnected but intact and the cab roof along with other components was on a flat car.

Some really neat, well-cared for rolling stock there as well. I took a few pictures. I'll scan them if anyone wants and post them somehow.

The last word I got was the boiler is ready to be removed from the frame and they are looking for a crane company that will either donate the lift or do it as cheaply as possible. They have their own truck and will haul it themselves. Their big show will be held the ten days before and during the Labor Day weekend. I believe they will run their four wheel critter on the passenger train during several of these days. The park has a parking fee and they charge for the train ride but the rest of the steam show is free. It is well worth the money.

If they want to do it cheap then they can lift it without a crane using timbers and cribbing. I've lifted heavy stuff before using this set up and it would take a couple of people a good part of the day to lift the boiler, roll the chassis out of the way and back the trailer under the boiler.

A couple of hydraulic bottle jacks and some 4x6 timber cribing and two beams are all thats needed.

In the old days we had to jack everything so this may well be plan C. They may also have a potential doner of the work in mind. I do not know. I will make a call and pass on your idea.
