On the NJ Turnpike at about Rt 9 on the east side of the road is an old ferry boat. It's been there for decades. Does anyone know the history of this vessel?

In addition does anyone know what happened to the ferries that used cross the river in Chester, PA?

I think you mean the one on the Raritan that you can see off the Turnpike near Route 1. She's Staten Island ferry Mary Murray.

CNJ's ferry Lakewood is in Philly (it is a Hooters) and another railroad ferry stored near by.

CNJ Cranford was scrapped after sitting in Brielle for years.

Lackawanna's "Binghamton" is in Edgewater, NJ.

Not too many RR ferries left!

There are retired ferries all over the New York/ New Jersy area. I think the one you are thinking of is the Jamestown (as in Rhode Island)

But you should call norman Brouwer Curator of Ships at the South Street Seaport Museum. He is at
(212) 748-8648. He knows them all.

Sadly none of the New York railroad ferries has been preserved. They awere many and varied. Did you know that the Central railroad of New Jersy had ferries?

The ferry in Phila is the Elizabeth. She was CNJ's last steam ferry and after the Aldene Plan in 1967, became a publicity boat for Public Service Electric when they were building the Salem nuke plant on the Delaware River.

Elizabeth went from being the last hand-fired coal burner in NY to being a publicity boat for a nuke plant!!!

She is now indeed a Hooters in Phila.
