The entire complex is a time capsule as is the town itself. All night beanery, the best hardware store I have ever seen. The glass walled roundhouse is just as in the pictures. v-scarpitti@att.net |

I have to agree with Bennett. It's really something to see at night with all the glass block illuminated. Although the steamers are no longer inside, the 0-10-2 is close by at the museum in Greenville, the 2-10-4 is still in Pittsburgh (too bad) and the 2-8-0 is at the Ford Museum in Dearborn. If anyone is interested, Steve Neff (Neff Video Productions) has a professionally produced video for sale that was made in cooperation with the B&LE. It has scenes from Greenville including the transfer table, shops, fuel dock, roundhouse, etc. beam@tusco.net |

Also, at one time, it had some of the nicest people around. My Dad and I visited there in about 1980. We stopped at the Greenville depot that, as it turned out, housed the office of the President of the railroad. His secretary welcomed us to the property, gave us a company calendar and some other advertising stuff, and directed us to an office building. At that building, they pulled a guy off of a desk, who escorted us to the roundhouse, and let us climb all over the three steamers for as long as we wanted. No hardhats, no questions asked (I don't think we even signed a release). I'll always be a fan of the B&LE. reddenej@aol.com |

Gee... What time of year was that?!? I too was there on vacation in 1980 and also asked for the tour. The fellow at the door checked with his bos just inside and we overheard: "Where are they all coming from?!?" The meaning was that several railfans had just been there before us. Indeed we did get a grand tour of the place and just as the steamers were fascinating, so were the F-units undergoing complete overhauls! B&LE knows how to treat fans right. sjwhitney@adelphia.net |
