with all the discussions below regarding these two fine institutions, I've always had a curious question or two... I know the Rio Grande held onto the D&S for a while after the end of the narrow gauge in the late 60's and the states of Colorado and New Mexico stepped in to preserve the engineering marvels to later become the C&TS; was there/has there ever been a serious consideration to re-link the two? How much of the row remains? I know this is an impossible venture now, but was it ever considered? Also, I've heard that some of the track remains in places along the row between Chama and Durango, where's it at and how much remains? Stations and structures, bridges, etc. still remaining on the abandoned sections? Also, do the two cooperate with each other today or are they competitors for the same tourist dollars? Thanks, Dan wichita_rails@msn.com |

Dan, There are indeed remains of the former D&RGW line between the two railroads. Most well know is Pagosa Junction in Gato, Colorado. This portion is pretty much like it was when retired, and includes a trestle, the mainline and siding, water tank, pumphouse (complete with boiler and "steam lizard"), the old Gomez store, and a couple pieces of rolling stock. The link below has pictures of Pagosa Junction, scroll down near the bottom of the page. If anyone has pictures inside the pumphouse I could post on my "Steam Lizards" group, I would appreciate it if you could forward them to me. I believe this pumphouse and water tank should also be documented for the HABS/HAER website; this setup is almost impossible to find anywhere else (isn't it?) -James Hefner Hebrews 10:20a > with all the discussions below regarding > these two fine institutions, I've always had > a curious question or two... I see on the map a gravel road going from hiway 160 down to Pagosa Junction/Gato, over “Cat Creek Gap”. Do you have any info on the condition of that road? I might have time to try it on a trip I’m taking to that area very soon, and would enjoy seeing what you’ve described. Thanks! |

I was over what is localy known as the Narrow Gauge Trail a few years ago. It is mostly a dirt road but it is passable by a regular automobile in fair weather. There are a couple of derilict water tanks and bridges still along the line to see and the road follows the original road bed in many places. The gem of it all though is the half mile long section of track and facilities left at Gato or Pagosa Junction as it was also called. Thanks for the information so far on the significant remnant at Pagosa Junction; any other pieces along the row from Chama to Durango? Great website and pictures! wichita_rails@msn.com |
