Yes, according to some news posted on the anthraciterr Yahoo Group, America's largest employer and purveyor of offshore goods is coming to the LNE shop site... Message: 2 Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2003 21:08:44 -0400 From: Pete & Roz Pennington Subject: LNE Yards - Pen Argyl Well - it's finally hit the newspapers. The owner of the yard property is negotiating with a developer to create a shopping center (size unknown) that will include Walmart. There is opposition from an adjacent boro (Wind Gap) that benfits from a K-Mart that's been in existence for a number of years. In addition, the local county development authority that has funded some low-level studies aimed at bringing new business to the area claims they've been blind-sided by the current activity. They claim their understanding was that the businesses planned for the property would be "higher income" businesses, not those that would provide primarily clerk-level jobs. So.......the battle lines are being drawn. In the end, however, it appears the one remaining major symbol of the late, great Lehigh & New Englang RR is doomed. More as things develop.......... Pete |
