1. Where were the observation car scenes made?

2. In the book there is some detailed explanation of Seabiscuit's special Pullman Car? What was this? Did the horse's car travel in the consist of regular passenger runs? The author mentions that the car was adjacent to a regular passenger car for the owner and trainer. Any photos or links are welcome.

The horse traveled in standard Horse Express cars. I understand that the movie used the Santa Fe car that is part of the collection of the Southern Chapter of the R&LHS. I heard that it was trucked off site to a place to do the filming.

There is coverage on these cars in the book put out by the Santa Fe Historical Society about the head-end passenger train cars of the Santa Fe.

The cars had stalls that could be stored away to open up the inside of the cars for general express use. Also the cars had end doors that allowed automobiles or other vehicles to travel with the horses. The automobile would then be used by the trainer or owner while the horse was at a race track.

These cars would have been hauled in a regular passenger train; but, in most cases on the Santa Fe it would have been either the "Grand Canyon" or the "Fast Mail" not one of the premier trains.

Here in Southern California both the Santa Fe and the Pacific Electric had sidings for horse cars near the Santa Anita racetrack.

The train scenes were filmed at the Fillmore & Western Railway in Fillmore California in early January. The "observation" car is former Santa Fe business car #409, which is owned by the F&W. An actual Santa Fe horse car was moved in to be part of the train as well and fomer Great Western 2-8-0 #51 was at the front of the "Seabiscuit Special", though it never appears on screen. 51 was bnot running and was pulled by a diesel. About 1/2 of the train scenes shot in Fillmore did not make it into the move, including some shot in car #409 and the horse car.
