For those who are looking for out of print books, try http://www.abebooks.com. This is a database maintained by used and rare book sellers that can be searched by ISBN, title, author name or keyword. It will identify all books that meet the search parameters available from the inventories of member book sellers and provides all of the information of the publication (book condition, any damage, title, author, publisher and publication date, ISBN, etc.) and its availability. I have purchased a couple of expensive books from member sellers and found the listings to be very accurate.

1) You didn't specify if you need it permanently or just for a while. Always remember Inter-Library Loan. It's not improbable that you could find said book at a university library and request it through interlibrary loan. Unlikely, but not impossible--certain public libraries have surprisingly-strong railroad sections.

2) Wonder Book and Video in Frederick, Md. (Google search, although they're part of abebooks.com) had a couple copies at $12.75 each a while back, which is how I got mine.

There are actually several mutiple-store book databases which can be searched on-line. I compiled a list of all the ones I could find, and added a section to my webpage including them. See the link below.

They are a great way to find Locomotive Cyclopedias and other old out-of-print railway books.

I thought that finding out of print books about ships was a challange.

Finding old books on railroad subjects is even worse! I am told that many titles are only produced in editions of between 500 to 1000. Now that is scarce!

I have had some success with Derail Books.
