Story was related to me that in 1970 when the NRHS convention was held in Charleston, S.C., a special train was put together to run over SCL to Savannah. Among the consist was a round-end obs. Upon arrival at the yard, WGC observed the obs switched into the middle of the train. Not good. He summoned the trainmaster and told him to switch the obs to one end of the consist or the other, then turn in his company materials because he was fired.

Don't know if the firing actually "stuck" but the moral of this story is an old one: Don't embarass the boss.

Could be why we had a long wait south of town that day. I remember that trip, it was a doubleheader with 722 and 4501. Went to an old roundhouse in Savanah and saw a couple of small locos there....could this be the Savanah museum today??? I probably have a couple of slides of the engines in the RH someplace.

PS. I do miss the Southern, and NS steam programs. It was always fun to chase a one-way trip, and practically nobody else was around.
