My brother shot this picture down in the Nashville,TN area and sent it to me for identification. I wasn't sure so I thought I'd try posting it here. Can anyone shed some light? The strange small object atop the far hood (above the bell) appears to be a Tennessee Titans football helmet on a stick...go Titans. ![]() SJHussar@aol.com |

Jay Reed's "Comprehensive Guide to Industrial Locomotives" references an un-numbered Davenport 80-ton locomotive at Steiner-Liff Iron & Metal, Nashville, TN. Built in 1953, for the US Army, later with the Department of Energy at Oak Ridge, TN. I also checked Jay's "Critters, Dinkys & Centercabs" identification guide and the locomotive does indeed appear to be a Davenport. A rather rare bird in this day and age. This locomotive was in a flood last year (the operation is alongside a river) and was heavily damaged. It is being dismantled/torched in the same scrap yard where it was used to move gondola loads of scrap for pickup by CSX. I sent one of its two trademark plates to the National Museum of Transport in St. Louis to be placed on their Davenport Gas Turbine loco. on display there. |
