Aerial Photographer Alex MacLean has a website of photographs he has taken from the air. The link below takes you to Gallery One / Abandonment, which has something for everyone:

1. Abandoned trains in Billerica, Massachusetts (are they really abandoned)

2. A shot of Witte's yard (Staten Island, NY. Beyond salvage). The photo shows the ferry BEACOM at the top, and the tug GARDEN STATE and a dredge at the bottom.

3. B-52 bombers being cut up in order to comply with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty.

4. Abandoned tugboat in the sand near the coastline, south of Savannah, GA (Dave, Jim, any idea what tug it is?

No idea about identity of any tug near Savannah.

The last tug used by C of G shipping subsidiary Ocean Steamship Co. is underwater off the New Jersey coast somewhere, but she was vandalized by conversion to diesel by her subsequent owners and didn't look right any more anyhow.

Very cool shots.....if anybody can provide some direction, it would be interesting to track down that hulk of a tug.

That is one beautiful tall stacked bluff bowed packet in the center of the Staten Island photo.

Looks like one of the old WWI Shipping Board tugs. Wonder if she's still there...

From top to bottom down the middle of the picture is:

* ferry BEACON
* unknown vessel
* 1919 tug BASCOBEL (so I guess it is a WWI shipping board tug?)
* submerged hull of unknown vessel
* unknown vessel
* unknown barge
* tugboat GARDEN CITY
* dredge GOVERNER WARFIELD

See the hull with the gun mount in the upper right hand corner? It is the submarine chaser PC-1217.

... many of the vessels in Witte were just about like you see them in the picture until sometime in the mid-1990s. After that, this end of the yard was mostly cleared out; only the ferry BEACON can still be indentified. I am afraid the BASCOBEL is no more. Also gone is the 1891 ferry LACKAWANNA.

On the other side of the BEACON (just above the picture) on to the other end of the yard, many of the vessels are still there; though in an advanced state of decay. They include two tugboats dating back to 1900, and the sister steamer to the NOBSKA, the NEW BEDFORD.

That's a shame about the Bascobel, in all the photos I've seen of her, she looked like she was in reasonably good shape... apart from being semi-sunk that is.
