What would be a general ballpark range for the horsepower of today's diesel locomotives (from least to most powerful)?

Least powerful: small switchers working feed mills and the like. HP range from 380 to 1500 hp, with 800-1000 being typical.

Mainline power: Some 1500-hp GP15T's might show up, by on average about 3000-4000 hp. A couple problematic 5000 and 6000-hp locos exist, but the older SD40-2's still running are 3000-hp locos.

On the modern GE locomotives, you get a clue of the horsepower from the model number. C30-7 -> 3000 hp, CW40-8 -> 4000 hp, CW60AC -> 6000 hp.
