Narrow gauge Mikado number 19 returned to service on Friday the 5th. The locomotive is one of two inside-framed wood-burners built by ALCO for the Sumpter Valley in 1920. In 1940 both the 19 and 20 were purchased by the White Pass & Yukon, converted to oil, and operated until 1958. In 1977 the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration acquired the engines, and number 19 was restored in 1996. In 2001 the locomotive was side-lined for firebox work. Most of the major repairs were completed last winter, but many minor problems were taken care of over the last two months. There is still a little to be done on the cosmetic side, but mechanically, the engine is running flawlessly. Follow the link for some pictures. Looks fantastic! Nice to see a clean engine. How much track does it have to operate on? Old Time Trains oldtimetrains@rrmail.com |

in the Sumpter Valley. Really easy to get to, just 22 miles off of Interstate 84 at Baker city. One can fly into Boise, 130 miles, and drive I84. We have a photo special Sat. Oct. 18, and will post additional information this week. ron http://www.svry.com ronbrin@eoni.com |
