Narrow gauge Mikado number 19 returned to service on Friday the 5th. The locomotive is one of two inside-framed wood-burners built by ALCO for the Sumpter Valley in 1920. In 1940 both the 19 and 20 were purchased by the White Pass & Yukon, converted to oil, and operated until 1958. In 1977 the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration acquired the engines, and number 19 was restored in 1996. In 2001 the locomotive was side-lined for firebox work. Most of the major repairs were completed last winter, but many minor problems were taken care of over the last two months. There is still a little to be done on the cosmetic side, but mechanically, the engine is running flawlessly. Follow the link for some pictures.

Looks fantastic! Nice to see a clean engine. How much track does it have to operate on?

Post subject:  About 5 Miles

in the Sumpter Valley. Really easy to get to, just 22 miles off of Interstate 84 at Baker city. One can fly into Boise, 130 miles, and drive I84.
We have a photo special Sat. Oct. 18, and will post additional information this week.
