Looks like some volunteers have been working on the Needleton tank on the Durango & Silverton. See link below.

The work is being done by a paid contractor. On one of my trips out there in 2001 I was told Al Harper had set up a non-profit through which he could channel some funds for restoring non-revenue aspects of the railroad. I don't know if it's true, and I don't know the details of this work, but what I can say is that Harper is much more open to preserving the heritage of the D&RGW than Bradshaw was.

As to volunteers, Harper once said he didn't want volunteers on the D&S, but I noticed quite a few with badges at RailFest, so obviously something has changed. Whether that extends to restoring equipment in the future, I don't know, but the place is certainly more welcoming than it used to be.
