I am reposting this from Trainorders.com:
24/03/00 18:32
No More LA Redondo Roundhouse
Mojave Vik
Attention all fans of L.A.'s famed Redondo Roundhouse, as of april 11, stalls 1-11 will be torn down in favor of a longer P.M. line. 3751 will be evicted and re-located. and in two years the rest of it will be torn down in favor of a new devlopement. It eass built in 1906 bu the Santa Fe for a western facility to service
engines. today, it is used by AMTRAK for their western facilities, and soon will no
longer be. It can be saved but only by someone who cares. the concervancies around L.A. do not seem to care. It qualifies as a land mark, but only you can save this Famed L.A. treasure. make your contacts, call friends. If you care, it can be saved. there are only a couple weeks left. please save it.
M. It is unbelievable that this publicly-owned (Amtrak)facility, the last Santa Fe roundhouse complete with turntable, might be destroyed without a whimper of complaint from the preservation community, even the group whose steam locomotive once called it home. Meanwhile, in nearby Fullerton, folks are making plans to build a new roundhouse and railroad museum.... Go figure...
We've had an editorial on Redondo pending for some time, but have held it up for lack of a good steam-era photo. Pentrex formerly sold a very good wide angle shot of the roundhouse, and we hoped someone might e-mail us a JPEG of it for the editorial. But despite several requests, no one responded with any of the needed photos. Guess that shows how much we as a group really care about saving such irreplacable pieces of history....
I will get a shot of it and send it to you.
Jeff B
