Greetings, South of Cincinnati on the Kentucky side (near Latonia) is what appears to be a roundhouse complex. It is next to the CSX main and appears to be a half-round with peaked roof. I noticed the same building in Covington back in May while there on business. I wondered myself if it wasn't an old roundhouse because it may not be recognizible as one at first glance. When I got home I did a little research, and it turned out to the the former C&O roundhouse built in the 1860's. I even was able to find an aerial photo of it on Microsoft Terraserver. Thanks for the link and info. This would be a nice museum to depict a much earlier era and/or smaller motive power since it would seem more modern power wouldn't be able to fit. First of all, I believe that the roundhouse in Covington, KY has already been torn down. The 1880's era roundhouse was owned by a paper bag manufacturer and earlier this year plans were made to remove it. I live within 15 minutes of the location but haven't been down there in several months so I can't be 100% certain. I will definiately take the long way home tonight to see if is in fact still standing. It was/is an interesting structure and still displayed the "C&O Offices" sign above the entrance. The building was showing it's age however and I believe it's safety was in question. The Covington area is also a rapidly growing business district so the structure did not fit into the city's future goals. I hope it was saved, but I am almost positive it was torn down around April/May of this year. Now, for the second question, Reading (Chessie) 2101 was stored in the C&O roundhouse at Silver Grove, KY which is a few miles up the Ohio River from Covington. That roundhouse is now gone as well as is the entire Silver Grove yard if I am not mistaken. |

I finally got the time to drive down to the old C&O roundhouse site in Covington. Just as I thought, the C&O office building has been demolished. However, the 1860 roundhouse itself is still intact and appears to still be in use by the paper bag manufacturer. |
