Mt. Washington No. 8 waits in the siding for another train. Very complicated, hand operated switchwork. It was on one of these switches (a piece of which apparently wasn't thrown properly) that a train ran away in the late 1960s, killing several people.

Truly an historic site.

Didn't know this had been added. Looks like some solar power is used. Too modern for me.

Greetings,

The Future is here NOW. The post at NERAIL states the photo was taken on Sept. 23rd and posted on Sept 13th. Today is Monday the 15th.

What a piece of machinery. Prior, if they ran a switch, they "may" have had a chance, now there is guarenteed catastropic results. I didn't look, i wonder if there is a "derail" up stream so speak, to protect the equipment + passenegers?

Good day;

Karl sent me to this message for my information. Having managed the car shop at the Cog (and thrown the old switches), where part of my responsibility was finishing the rebuild on the wrecked AL coach from the big wreck, I think this switch is a big improvement and will probably save lives in the future. I think there is enough frame there that a derailed vehicle would have something to slide on.

I agree that this new switch is a big improvement, if not as interesting to watch being thrown. I doubt there is any safety problem with possible runaways as they probably always leave it set for the main unless a train is actually taking the siding; once in the siding, the switch would obviously be thrown back for the main to let another train by.
