What steam engine did I see?

I was traveling northbound on the Northeast corridor this past Thursday evening north of Newark and I looked off to my right to see a string of red passenger coaches being pulled by steam and diesel? I was very surprised to see this --- anyone know what this engine was doing there and what engine it was?

The New Susquehanna & Western's Chinese 2-8-2 142 and train enroute to this past weekend's excursions out of Dunnellen, NJ over NJ Transit's Raritan Valley Line.
