Question?
What was the rule on Baldwin number plates and their color patterns. For example, the EBT engines and NH&I 40 have black in the center, where I have seen black around the lettering and red around the numbers. Also, Strasburg 90 has all red. Was this a perference by the railroad on which the engines ran, or did Baldwin have a method to their madness?

Thanks,

This doesn't answer your question, but to the best of my knowledge EBT's have always had a black center and red on the outside. In a recent article in Classic Trains on the Great Western I noticed that 90's number plate was all black. You do pose an interesting question though.

Aaron
