CN donated a bunch of stuff when it closed down its narrow gauge operation in Newfoundland. Most of it seems in fairly poor condition today, and some has since been scrapped. Anyone from up there have some positive news?

That would unlikely because the railway had been totally gone from Newfoundland for several years.

I'm not a Newfie, but My wife is. She is from Corner Brook, NF, and the granddaughter of a CN trainman. There's now a pretty good little museum in Corner Brook, housed in the old Humber Mouth Depot. Displays include a 1920 Baldwin 4-6-2 #593 (the only steam engine left on the island), an EMD NF210 diesel, a wedge snowplow, five passenger cars and freight equipment including a caboose. The sponsoring group is the 'Railway Society of Newfoundland'.

Speaking of railroad and railway preservation in Canada, one should get a copy of Guide to Canada's Railway Heritage by Daryl T. Adair. Published by North Kildonan Publications in 2001.

Province by Province across the country. Including a roster of every steam engine in the country. Both main line rail and traction are covered. The Corner Brook Railway Museum is on page 96.

When did rail service end in Newfoundland?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom,

There is a wonderful series of books on the Newfoundland Railway by Mont Lingard. Much of the Photography is Mike Shufelts work. Titles
include "Next stop: Gaff Topsail" and "Next Stop: Wreckhouse" There are others

The author quotes the last day of operation as Sept 30, 1988. The last rails were taken up by the end of 1990.

Hope this helps!

Mike

The uploader included his email address. The "subject" line seems to include a date, possibly when the photo was taken (i.e. "7-25-01"). IF this photo WAS taken only two years ago... then there are interesting possibilities. :-)

Here's a link to more photos of 4-6-2 #593 and some of the other equipment at Corner Brook. There is also a 'Railway Heritage Center' operating in a replica depot at Channel Port-Aux-Basques, on the extreme southwest tip of the island. They have another GM NF210 diesel(CN #934 in Green Livery), a snowplow, and several freight and passenger cars, but I haven't yet turned up any good photos. They have a web site at http://www.gatewaytonewfoundland.com/at ... itage.html.
There are several of the NF210 diesels displayed on the island; #924 is at Bishop Falls, #925 is at Avondale, #931 is at Corner Brook, #934 at Port-Aux-Basques, and #940 at Whitbourne.
