For those interested, all the parts and pieces of the 1702 have been shipped back to Dillsboro. This includes the 4 wheelsets with all new axles, 6 of 8 crank pins replaced, 8 new driving boxes with CDA 945 crown brass, and 8 newly fabricated oil cellars. If you attended the recent ARM convention, you had the opportunity to hear a detailed explanation on why the roller bearings failed. The presentation was made by Brian Cave, Chief Engineer of the Timken Company. Brian went on to say that Timken currently does not make a bearing suitable for steam locomotive driving wheel service. I guess Kid Friction will live on... Meanwhile, work continues on with the CN 3254 wheels. We also still working on wheels for the FEC 0-8-0 #253 and our next project will be K&T 0-6-0 #14. The NKP #765 wheels have returned to Ft. Wayne ready for installation. See all of you at TRAIN. G. Mark - TVRM TVRM Shop Updates by Steve Freer aw90@comcast.net |

"Timken currently does not make a bearing suitable for steam locomotive driving wheel service." Mark: I wasn't at ARM, but I'd like to know more. Does this mean that Timken is no longer interested in supplying these bearings? Are there other manufacturers out there? Likely there aren't many with the history and folklore of Timken. Did Timken pay for any of the retrofit? Likely that's none of our business, but I assume that they thought their product was fit for that purpose at the time of sale. Thanks in advance. We also still working on wheels > for the FEC 0-8-0 #253 and our next project > will be K&T 0-6-0 #14. Why are wheels being turned for FEC 253? Is this engine being rebuilt to run again? Is the rest of the engine still in the Miami area? ryarger@rypn.org |

Is > this engine being rebuilt to run again? Is > the rest of the engine still in the Miami > area? Apparently Yes and Yes, judging from this Web site: http://www.fecrs.com/FEC253.html#intro Florida East Coast Railway Society eledbetter@rypn.org |

I'd like to know more too - perhaps it can be retreaded at TRAIN? Recent discussion on the SteamTech list included New Zealand steam guys using SKF rollers in driver applications with success. Dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

The NKP #765 > wheels have returned to Ft. Wayne ready for > installation. G. Mark: Clarification please. I assume by K&T you are talking about the Kentucky & Tennessee Railroad. But K&T had Mikes, numbers 10, 11 and 12 at the end of steam. Number 10 survives at TVRM and #12 is the famous ex-Southern 2-8-2 that became Southern #4501 again (also at TVRM.) K&T did not have a 0-6-0 at the end. Morehead & North Fork however DID have an 0-6-0 numbered 14 at the end of steam; ex-Union Railroad #77. This locomotive was used on a tourist type operation somewhere but I am not sure what its current status is. So...is your next project K&T 2-8-2 #10 or M&NF 0-6-0 #14, or something else entirely?. (Cumberland Falls Ky) as #77 then sold at auction to K&T after the operation shut down. Sorry I don't remember the year. Whitewater Valley Railroad lumpy72@msn.com |

Dave, SKF also supplied the roller bearings for the nearly 100 Garratts that were modernized and returned to service in Zimbabwe in the 1980's. I'm pretty sure the A-1 steam project in the UK (a new full-sized 4-6-2 presently under construction) is equipped with SKF bearings also. Actually Union #77 Became M&NF #!4, which went to Tombstone Junction RR, was sold to Big South Fork Senic RR back in the mid 1990s. I guess they are going to paint it up as K&T #14, maybe not. david.wilkins@bardstown.com |

GS-5's, but can not recall if it was 4458 or 4459. The other one had Timkens. Which axles on the 1702 had failed rollers?? Did grease vs. oil as lubricant have anything to do with the failure? justighe@bright.net |
