This may have been discussed earlier, but a search of the last 6 months did not turn up "Belmont", so... Yesterday, I saw a wood caboose on the north side of Belmont, NY, on the east side of NY Route 19. It appears to be undergoing restoration. Any info on its heritage? tr2manz@frontiernet.net |

Thomas, It is a former Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh caboose (B&O class I-10). I don't remember the number offhand. I am in the process of restoring a sister caboose, BR&P 280 (B&O C-2631), at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush, NY. That caboose is interesting because it was one of the few of that class of caboose, many of which are still around surprisingly, that was off the roster before the B&O rebuilt that series in the 1960's. The B&O took control of the BR&P in the 1930's. Thus, it retains its as built interior and window configuration. While I have not visited it myself yet, I have been using pictures of it taken by some of our museum members in our restoration of our #280 back to its BR&P configuration. I hope to get a closer look soon as I need to make some more measurements and take some more photos. I do know the owner is interested in restoring it, and it appears from your note that some work is underway. I hope that helps. Some pics of the restoration work on our caboose are available in our Museum News page linked below. Until later, Chris R&GVRR Museum News Archive crhauf@frontiernet.net |
