Looks like another one bites the dust. Presume the other roundhouse mentioned is the former PRR facility in Crestline? Was there no insurance or is the "contractor" not liable for destroying a pretty much intact roundhouse slated for preservation? Railroad museum plans derailed hkading@rypn.org |

It would be interesting to know what they mean by "The engine, one of only six left in the nation" as well. There certainly are more engines than that, more steamers than that, more Mikados than that, and more ex-GTW steamers even, but only one GTW Mikado. What about the former Youngstown Southern complex at Negley? ( or is Negley in Penn.?) Not a roundhouse, but a steam era engine house none the less. |

The last time I was in Lima (several years ago) the turntable for the former Nickel Plate yards (now NS) was still in place. Anybody know if it's still there? Railway Preservation News hkading@rypn.org |

Not sure what > use CSX is making of it. ================================================== Yes, the Chessie Steam Special would stop in Columbus in the 1970's and 1980's, be serviced at the Parsons facility, turned on the table and ready for the next excursion. The roundhouse is a 12 (?) stall house and can be seen right off Parsons Yards and Parsons Ave. CSX keeps the building in good shape as they use one half of the structure and the other half is rented out. (Last I knew, a dry wall company used it as a store/warehouse.) I was inside and the interior is made with giant beams to support the building. Turntable still operates as they would spot box car full of "wall board" for the warehouse, on the table and push them into a stall for unloading. Don't know much more on the facility other than it is of brick construction and well maintained. In answering another comment about the Lima, Ohio turntable near the former Lima Locomotive shops. Yes it is still in operation. I traveled up there a few years ago and watched a local NS crew turn a loaded freight car on the table. NKP Steam engine #779 is still in Lincoln Park, Lima, Ohio. Also, the diamond at Erie Junction, just east of the NKP turntable, has been removed. There is a new spur off the B&O going west into the tracks formerly reached from the Erie. And, work is supposed to start next year on an electric-generating plant on the Loco sight, with one of the 3 remaining bldgs to be used as some sort of monument to the LLW. The whole area is really sad now; maybe the new facility will restore some degree of prosperity to South Lima. justighe@bright.net |
