CNR 4-6-4T's

The other day I wandering thru the Steamtown yard and looked at CNR 47, a Suburban 4-6-4T. It has a wide firebox. Not out to the clearance limit like a proper Camelback but the grate area is clearly wider than the boiler.

Did these engines burn anthracite as a smoke abatement measure? If so, did CNR import US anthracite for them?

No they did not burn hard coal. Its a wide box but not as wide as a whooton box. btw I rode on all 3 of then and fired some on the run to dorval.regards rob
