via highway

These days, when some feel it necessary to transport even 4-8-4s via highway (what do those big round things under the boiler do?), I found this photo of a new Porter coming to a narrow gauge railroad in Wisconsin. No special permits needed then, nor electrical lines to watch out for.

I saw pictures of the UP 4-8-4 being moved by highway out west within the past few years. #838 or 833 perhaps? Now that was IMPRESSIVE!!!

The problem today is that those big round wheels are connected to friction bearings. And they are "dangerous" all the time at any speed and
circumstances.

Well friction bearings worked for 100 years in all kinds of railroads. And it seems to me that moving equipment at slow speed with many eyes on the bearings would not be such a "Manace".

museums typically do not run high speed, heavely loaded equipment.

So I guess those truck folks are going to be getting more work in the future.
