Concrete block building at Clouqet, MN. It is said that this new building (replacing one that burned in the early 1950s) so strained the RRs finances that it couldn't afford to dieselize, running steam into the 1960s. http://community.webshots.com/photo/60177587/95833391HPYxBN ryarger@rypn.org |

That's definitely an older pic there. The boiler jacket and lagging are gone now, along with all the cab window and headlight glass. A D&NE wood caboose has also been added to the display since then. The pictures of D&NE bring back memories of my first railfan trip in November of 1962, when I was in college at Michigan Tech (yes, I am a Yooper, or was before moving to Ca.). During our two days there my roommate and I saw all four considations switching the various paper mills, and rode the #28 to Saginaw (junction with the DM&IR); we rode the caboose back. They made two trips to Saginaw a day then. D&NE still had their passenger tariff and you could buy a ticket to ride; they were friendly enough so you could ride either the cab or the caboose! It was my first sight of working steam since I became a railfan in high school, and I became hooked on steam. I shot my first railroad movies there. Perhaps because of that experience, I became a volunteer worker and crewman at a local railroad museum in California (Castro Point Railway, now the Niles Canyon Railway), and after my recent retirement, a fireman on a steam tourist railroad (Roaring Camp and Big Trees). Incidentally, I made another trip to Cloquet in December 1963 to find the first diesel running on the D&NE, an ex-EJ&E SW-1! Depressing, but I suppose it was inevitable.
