Vermont Excursion Derailment

Just got word that the Mass Bay RRE excursion over Vermont Railway's newly acquired line north of White River Jct., VT went on the ground near Fairlee. No details yet. Anyone have more to add?

Let's hope for similar good luck and no injuries as with last weekend's Steamtown derailment.

I heard that at least one coach was tipped over a little,and that there were several "evacuations" whatever that means from a pretty reliable source.I don't know any more than that but I hope no one was injured, or equipment damaged. I know that the trip was sold out and that there was talk of running a second trip on sunday the 2nd which was almost sold out.

The link below goes to the Times Argus story printed today. Thank heaven no one was hurt. Credit is given to the expertise of the engineer Scott Whitney who did a great job of keeping things on the rails. Scott has posted here on RyPN a number of times too. Nice job Scott! Perhaps the trip will run next year?

I was on this derailment. The first locomotive stayed on the track. The second one, from what I heard, started the derailment process. I was on the next to last car and we listed quite a bit towards the Connecticut River, but every coach stayed on the ballast. No one was hurt and the Mass Bay/Vermont Rail folks did an excellent job - much better than the Steamtown folks last weekend. Like last weekend, no one panicked, no one went running around trying to make a fool of themselves and both incidents showed the stammina and cool-head attitude we rail fans possess. I am glad I am a member of the railfan community.
