Does anyone know how badly the 2317 was damaged when it derailed and is it going to be able to pull the polor express trains?
Also what caused the derainment?
thank you

Not badly at all according to Steamtown's Tim O'Malley in another post--maybe a bit of work to the rear tender truck.

As of Noveber 5, Tim certainly thought so.

Well, as somebody said elsewhere, the rail rolled over. As to exactly why the rail rolled over, whether it was something to do with the condition of the ties and/or spikes, something to do with the roadbed or subroadbed, something to do with the dynamic augment of the steam locomotive, or something else I haven't thought of, nobody has said yet. I believe NTSB is investigating and I assume they will issue a report down the road.
