Post subject:  Half the Loco it used to be....

Can anyone tell me of the GG1's which were cut into "half-unit" locomotives? I could swear that I've seen a pic, but I don't recall exactly.

I think you're missing a "why" there. If so, I can help!

I saw the same picture, at least one was converted into some sorta thing-a-ma-gig to blow snow from the tracks. I don't know the specifics.

Page 58 of Karl R. Zimmerman's "The remarkable GG-1" has the picture you're looking for.

The caption says it was #4846 that was cut down in 1967 to make a self propelled snowblower. Apparently it was used to clean the area around the Wilmington repair shops.

Here's a link to another photo of #4846. Loewy would have rolled over in his grave! According to the website it survived until at least 1977. I wonder where the other half went.
