A recent post on trainorders.com says that Union Pacific is having another big auctioning off of locomitives that have been displaced by the arrival more SD70Ms. Lots of ex-SP,WP,CNW,MKT, and MoPac engines in the offering.

This could be a good oppertunity for spare parts or for preserving an engine.

There has been an interesting after effect of the Class One sell-off of older 6-axle power (especially the glut of UP and CN family auctions).

The regionals that have been buying these locomotives have been using them to replace some older -- and perhaps even more rare -- locomotives.

For instance, there has been great turnover on the Susquehanna, B&LE and the Reading & Northern as former UP and CN six-axles have come east. The fleets they are replacing include a wide variety of second generation four-axle power.

Many of these replaced units are rolling out their lives as leasers or industrial switchers. Larry's Truck & Electric has seen a bunch, too. ;-(

It might be interesting to follow the bouncing EMD. See who wins the auctions, where those engines are going, and what's being relegated to the scrap heap.

One of the factors that has been driving the ongoing retirement of all these locomotives has been the onset of locomotive emissions regulations by the EPA.

Fortunately, these rules have no direct effect on the preservation arena or most shortlines and regional roads. However, they do have a great effect on Class 1 motive power and the larger leasing outfits.

In the case of GE locomotives, I would suspect that four and six axle Dash 7 and Dash 8 locos will become relatively "rare birds" over time.
I am speaking about 3000 hp ratings and above. These GE locos have never found great acceptance in the second-hand marketplace and the current emissions standards (Tier I) will probably continue, if not accentuate that trend. The affected GE locomotives would require a great deal of modification (and dollars) to meet the standards. I also note a small, but ongoing trend to resell these things offshore.

For those who are EMD partisans, the future is somewhat brighter. The economics of upgrading a 40,50 or 60 series unit to meet the current standards are somewhat more favorable. Couple that fact with the ongoing preference for EMD in the second-hand market...so I doubt anyone needs to lose sleep about his (or her) favorite EMD "going extinct" any time soon.
