Does anyone know the availability of a 40Â’ boxcar on trucks, (in fair to good condition, preferably wood but steel would work too), that is up for sale or donation to be used in a static museum display. IÂ’m looking. Thanks.

You'll probably have a hard time finding a wood boxcar in really good shape, but a few months back the Bluegrass railroad museum was offering a rough, double-sheathed Louisville and Nashville car for a hundred bucks, and it may be available if you check their website (www.bgrm.org). Be patient, because I had a hard time getting in touch with their webmaster in January.
Also, word through the grapevine a while back was that Mid-Continent was interested in selling their AT&SF double-sheathed car; I don't remember where I heard this so its accuracy is questionable. Maybe someone from that museum can confirm or deny on this board. I'd contact them directly (contact info at www.midcontinent.org).

What about all those ex-AC&Y 40 foots that Mid Continent has? Did they have like 5 or 6 of them at one point?

You might check with the Indiana Railway Museum in French Lick, IN. A couple of years ago they had a number of 40 steel cars stored on the property.

Kovalchick Salvage has some 40' Army surplus wood boxcars in poor condition stored at Mt. Union, PA.

In Knoxville,Tenn there is an old steel boxcar without trucks that is of the wagon top steel construction like the B&O did.It is used for storage by some business.It is located on Rutledge Pike about halfway between the I-40 exit and Norfolk Southern's John Seveir Yard.

The last couple of trips I took back to inspect track at the Earle Naval Weapons Station in New Jersey, they had a bunch of old 40' and 50' steel boxcars back on the deadline waiting to be scrapped.

We've toyed with getting one as well as another item of two, but the crosscountry trucking costs have so far scared us off.

The Pennsylvania Trolley Museum is offering free to a good home a rare 1910 Pre-USRA box car this is no longer needed by our Museum which is 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, PA. It is Union Railroad #10453 built in 1910 by the Pressed Steel Car Co. of McKees Rock, PA for use in tin service. It is considered one of the earliest 50 ton capacity cars still inexistence and features a “fish belly” under frame, original Simplex arch bar trucks and tin roof. The car was modified by the railroad with AB brakes and was made into a tool car around 1940. Modifications included attaching a platform with caboose steps on one end and end doors added on both ends. One side box car door was removed and sheathed over so wooden parts bins could be installed full length inside.

This car would make a great work car display and as an example of turn of the last century freight car construction. It is offered “as is – where is” to a railroad, trolley or depot museum. It would have to be trucked or put on a flatcar for transport. The car’s dimensions are 47 feet long knuckle to knuckle, 9 ft 5 ½ inch wide plus grab irons, 13 ft 2 ½ inches high rail head to roof and weighs approximately 50,000 lbs complete with trucks. The Earle fleet is dwindling... the really cool stuff was scrapped awhile back, but there are plenty of boxcars.

These Navy boxcars are a great choice for a museum that just "needs a boxcar" for storage and doesn't want to gum up a truly historic relic.

Also, you might want to get one of the many PRR boxcars Amtrak has left along the NEC, as I am hearing they will all be gone soon.

I tried about a year ago (unsuccessfully) to contact someone there that would be able to provide some info on what was there and currently available. In particular, I was trying to find out about the 50' door-and-a-half boxcars. If they are already scrapped, this is a moot question, but any contact info (reply off list if necessary) would be greatly appreciated.
