RE: this Flimsies piece on moving the stone depot at Redmond, Oregon. Can this project really be completed for about $600,000? The winning contractor will dismantle it stone-by-stone, then re-erect it outside a new frame wall, apparently retaining the original interior.

With other (left in place) depot projects running into the millions, this price seems low for all that work.

The losing bidder wanted to move it intact, seemingly also a difficult task. How does one move a heavy stone building like that without it crumbling?

1. Very Carefully!
2. I like to think that building movers can handle just about any type of building going. Of course they must get underneath, brace lift and shift, worry about the route, utilities etc.
3. In Amherst, OH at the Sandstone Center several stone schools, buildings and homes have been disassembled, moved and reassembled undergoing complete restoration for a very nice display. These were done this way because of the impossibility of moving over the roads.
