Post subject:  Origins of Trains Under the Christmas Tree?
A local reporter has noticed the large number of rail-themed Christmas events in the Baltimore-Washington area. These include our own Holly Trolleyfest, a model layout at B&O Ellicott City station, and numerous "Christmas Garden" displays at fire stations and shopping malls.

The reporter asked me about the origins of the link between Christmas celebrations and trains. I recall that it may orginate in Germany with the tradition of building villages under the tree?

Any details on the origins of the tradition are appreciated.

I seem to recall having read that wrapping paper, and later product packaging, were not used in gift giving until fairly recently. Gifts were hung on the tree, and when they were too big, they were put under or behind the tree. I speculate that the trains under the tree were probably gifts.
