Post subject: GC Ry. 4690 tender?
PostPosted: Thu Dec 04, 2003 5:42 pm

Gentlemen,

We are having a discussion over on the SooLineHistory list about the ex-Soo Line tender that was once with Dick Jensen's GTW 5629, and I stated that I was under the impression that this tender was now at the Grand Canyon Ry, on ex CB&Q 4960. That seems to be incorrect, as someone has supplied a link to a photo of the 5629 being scrapped:

It looks like the tender is being cut, too. So, where did the big tank now on the 4960 come from? Railfan & Railroad reported rhat it was the tender from Soo 4012 (the tender on GTW 5629 came off of Soo 4013) but Soo historian Stu Nelson has info that shows that engine going to scrap with its tender. Anyone know the history of the tender at the GC Ry? If it is a Soo Line tender, anyone know the number (which would have been on a cast plate at the center of each side of the cast tender bed.)

The tender behind the 4960 was purchased from Minnesota Transportation Museum in 1993. It was in wreck train service for the Soo and the coupler pocket had been modified to fit in the drawbar pocket. The number escapes me but 4003 comes to mind.
