Nothing like scheduling a Thomas event during a 48 hour snow storm to keep you working. About 3” of snow fell today, 5” more forecast tonight, 5” more forecast tomorrow. Unless conditions prove to be untenable tomorrow, we will be running Thomas, #90, the Cagney, Plymouth #1, plus #33 with the Russell snow plow as needed. A large number of pre-sold Thomas tickets make this necessary. Crews are to report at 7:30am to start to clear the line. Thomas starts at 9:45, the regular train at 11:00, at least that’s the plan. From the time the first employee arrives at work, we’ll be playing it by ear.

Good Luck Kelly!

We have 4+ inches on the ground, blowing and drifting with a total forecast accumulation of 15 – 18” by storm’s end, Sunday morning. Unfortunately, due to the weather and forecast blizzard conditions for Saturday, the Railroad Museum of Long Island at Greenport is canceling its Santa Claus Open House tomorrow. We hope that roads will be clear and conditions have improved by Sunday noon so we can salvage one day of the event.

LIRR passenger train #253, (22:28 hrs) westbound from Greenport just reported high snow drifts on the mainline east of Southold NY. They got through but have advised train dispatch to have the morning crew look out for hazard conditions. That would be the train we bring Santa in on! Overall conditions may force the Museum to use alternate transportation on Sunday if mainline cuts are drifted over.

Yes, Good luck folks.
I was at the Hagley conference yesterday (in the first part of the storm and it took three hours to get back to Princeton (its usually about an hour fifteen or so). The Strasbug guys never made it to Wilmington. That was before the main part of the storm hit. I'm looking out the window now and there are about 8 new inches in my driveway. It will be interesting to read the after action... that is after Kelly has a chance to thaw out.

Two side notes:

1. Local radio in Philadelphia is encouraging the use of public transportation to the Army-Navy game this afternoon because of the weather. If only we still could.

2. Anybody who has the opporunity should take in the Penn Station exhibit at the Hagley.

Well we got through it thanks to the wonderful people that work here at Strasburg. Thomas is putting his train away at the moment and he is still smiling - which is always a good sign.

It's tough to beat steam in the snow, and we had plenty of both. The customers loved it.

One more day to go.

How did Sir Topham Hatt manage to arrange for snow on the Isle of Sodor?

Does Thomas mind running in the snow?

No he doesn't, but his crew sure does! I was on Thomas yesterday, with Carl and Andy, and with no windows to close, no rain gutters on the cab roof, and with the train kicking up snow on the backup move, not to mention what was falling from above, we were all soaked through by 11 o'clock. Not so much as a quarter slip all day though, starting an eight car train on a 1%+ grade.
