Hi friends,

I received a most interesting e-mail this week. The interlocking tower from Sterling, NY that once guarded the crossing of the Lehigh Valley's coal route to the Lake Ontario docks and the NYC was taken out of service in 1930 and moved to a local farm.

It is now a preservation candidate! The Sterling folks need help and advice. I know you guys can offer that!

My name is Steve Poydock. I am currently on a task force to help to preserve a local railroad signal tower. I am also trying to locate some information regarding the life of workers in such a building. I have been unsuccessful in locating information on the internet about signal towers.

I am working with the Sterling (NY) Historical Society to determine the feasibility of restoring such a building. This has been donated to the SHS by a local farmer who moved it (1930) from its original site. The site was at junction of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and the Oswego-Rochester Division of the New York Central Railroad. That ...intersection was very busy with rail traffic and was controlled by the operator in the Railroad Signal Tower using its 24 levers and a telegraph... I'm also looking for information about the related "semaphore" signal which helped to provide safe movement of the rail traffic.

I would appreciate any information you may wish to pass along to us at the Sterling Historical Society or information about related references in which I may be more successful.
