How were wooden sand towers made to not leak sand? They appear to be constructed just like water towers, and I know that water towers had to be kept full so that the wood didn't dry out and shrink, causing leaks. Locomotive sand is supposed to be kept dry, so what kept the sand tower wood from drying out, shrinking, and causing sand leaks? Any info would be appreciated.

The couple of wooden sandhouses I've seen were built of tongue and groove boards, and there was a little apparent leakage, but of course sandhouses have so much sand around them anyway, it's hard to tell where it came from.
