The Ohio Central Steam Department Website has been updated to show the progress of the restoration of our newest steam locomotive, ex-LS&I 2-8-0 #33. The goal is to have her done sometime this Summer. Everyone that has worked on a steam locomotive knows you never set deadlines. We will have her up to spec with the FRA part 230 work when she is finished. We will paint her back into her LS&I colors including olive green jacketing. We still have a few tickets remaining for the Winter Photo Special with 4-8-4 #6325. For more info visit www.ocsteam.com Jason www.ocsteam.com ![]() jmjohnson@ohiocentral.com |

Jason, > We will paint her back into her > LS&I colors including olive green > jacketing. Sounds like she'll be really sharp looking! Are you folks keeping the LS&I "look" (headlight/bell/airpump placement)? I remember 33's "brutish good looks" from a long ago visit to the Hocking Valley Scenic RR. It's a little hard to believe that 33 and WMSR 734 are sisters, what with (7)34 in her present form. Also, do you guys have the tender booster? If so, any plans to refit it to the engine? As for the photo... Title it: "A new way to remove the old tubes: torch the ends; shove into shop at 30 mph; apply brakes REALLY HARD!" ...just kidding, you guys do a fantasic job, good luck with the 33. Regards, Jim Robinson |

I would be curious to find out more on how this engine ended up in Ohio and its service history at Hocking Valley Scenic. The 33 always seemed like a mystery; you never heard much about it running or saw many pictures of it when it was in operation. I suspect for the last thirty or so years it has had a hard life, with lots of weekend warriors running the you-know-what out of it and surviving from season to season with patch up repairs. I suspect the HVS no longer had the money, expertise or interest in running her. Let's home it gets better TLC at the OC. Think about it: with nine engines in his collection, Jerry Joe Jacobson is quickly becoming the modern Paulsen Spence. > The Ohio Central Steam Department Website > has been updated to show the progress of the > restoration of our newest steam locomotive, > ex-LS&I 2-8-0 #33. Several good photos have been found to go by, but like all steam locomotives, there are slight variations in every photo. We will just have to select a certain period and go with that style. > Also, do you guys have the tender > booster? If so, any plans to refit it to the > engine? We have all intentions of putting the booster back under the old girl. The original booster has been scrapped. Another tender booster has been located and we are in the process of obtaining it. It will make a nice addition to this brute! Jason www.ocsteam.com

Easy there, we know what happened to Paulsen and his collection. In some shots on the OC website I saw a maroon, yellow, and black lettering for the CPR. Any ideas what that piece of rolling stock is? Joshua |

It had a bad prime mover. It now has a new prime mover installed and is going back together. It will be relettered Ohio Central when it comes out of the shop. I beleive we have on the property 9 or 10 F40ph's. Most painted Amtrak, two painted in the maroon paint. Jason |

| Post subject: | Smoke Tube remowal question ? 2-8-0 #33 |
Good to se the smoke tubes ( or is it called flues? ) remowed. Did you burn them off whith a torch? My question is actually: is there a method remowing the tubes ( after grinding clean/flush the weldings in the firebox of course! ) without using a torch? We are retubing our Norwegian class 30a #271, a 4 cyl, 100 ton tenwheeler - compared to American locomotives a little flea. Keep up the good work. Regards Ragnar Andenæs |

Goddagas Ragnar; Mechanical tube cutters are out there - they are inserted into the end of the tube and powered by a hydraulic motor through a flexible telescoping shaft. the motor usually hangs on a bar bolted to the smokebox door ring studs. As the shaft turns the cutter, a blade extends from a cavity in the cutter and starts to rotate around the inside diameter of the tube, eventually cutting all the way through in a few revolutions. The remaining ends of the tubes are removed with air chisels. Hopefully you an find these tools - perhaps a shipyard? dave irondave@bellsouth.net |

However if this is the first time you have taken out tubes imo. it would be best if you had some one who has done it work with you the first time. Then there is less chance for a screw up. You can do a lot if you have good tools and know how to use them. ie on this last job I have taken out 10-12 mud ring rivets an hour. And useing my plasma torch cut off and removed 6 to 10 flexie bolts and threaded sleeves in a hour. Without the right tools thats an all day job. btw are you in the USA or Canada? good luck bb |

| Post subject: | Use of tube cutters |
Use of tube cutters to remove tubes and flues was one of our early inspirations when working with PM 1225. These things cut the tubes just fine, but we quickly discovered that they also bell out the tube in the manner of a tube roller, so that the cut flue cannot be removed through the kinghole in the flue sheet without cutting the end off with a torch. Of course the small tubes can be removed through the big flue holes, but a torch remains the usual means of removing tubes. One use of tube cutters is to trim overlong tubes to fit each position in the tube sheet, compensating for bowed tube sheets without the laborious job of measuring the length of each position and cutting a tube to fit. The extra length is cut off after setting, and it speeds up the beading job, too if you need beaded ends. This method guarantees that each tube has an identical-size bead, which looks nice although it doesn't contribute a whole lot. Aarne Frobom The Steam Railroading Institute P. O. If the small tubes are more than .030" out of round and the s.h. flues are over .060" out of round I run a tube hole reamer in to true them up. That way they stay tight longer and you don't have to roll them as much. In time if you don't do this you may have to replace the tube sheet sooner not later. regards bb > Ragards Ragnar Andenæs |
